Go West, Young Man

Documentary, 2003, 84 min.

Directors Peter Delpeut and Mart Dominicus make a sentimental journey across the West of the United States, in search of traces of the Western. Through the windscreen of their car, they shoot the panoramic landscape of Wyoming, Arizona and Nevada, accompanied by irresistible Western music. They film in bars and cities, interview Western lovers and pay visits to traditional craftsmen, ranches and cowboys, who are quietly branding cows. In a fake Western town, fake cowboys in quick succession show how to fall down when shot by various weapons. They show extracts from the Western classics Shane (George Stevens, 1953), The Searchers (John Ford, 1956), Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Sam Peckinpah, 1973) - and from Monte Walsh (1970), the director of which, William Fraker, returns to the deserted set. All these things are still there; only the Western itself has disappeared.
