In the Holy Fire of Revolution

Documentary, 2008, 113 min.

Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov ended his chess career to go into politics. With his democratic party, he is now in opposition to Vladimir Putin's regime. Kasparov blames Putin for his authoritarian demeanour that has changed Russia into a dictatorship. Since the former KGB agent and head of the Federal Security Service (FSB) rose to power, the influence of the FSB has only grown.
Director Masja Novikova follows Kasparov for two years and shows that opposition members have a rough time of it. They are denied access to the press, they are beaten up during their demonstrations, they are arrested, they are followed everywhere by Putin's youth movement and accused of high treason, they are squeaked on by comrades or bribed by the Kremlin. What is more, the people have little faith in them, because they botched up in the post-perestroika period when they were in power.
