Documentary, 1998, 95 min.

The sixth and last part from a series in which filmmaker Frank Scheffer has translated a modern composition into the structure and style of his film. In The Road, Scheffer follows the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen as he works on his work Tao. It was inspired by the Chinese manuscript the Tao-te-Ching, a poetic and philosophical text about death. The film shows the work of the composer from concept to premiere. Andriessen works out his first thoughts in Amsterdam and seeks inspiration in the USA, China and Japan. The Japanese pianist Mukaiyama Tomoko plays a prominent role both in the performance of the piece and the film. In the film she travels to Japan to fetch a kotu - a Japanese string instrument - and she recites poems in a Japanese cemetery.
