Blanco - The Hidden Language of the Soul

Short documentary, 2009, 48 min.

Blanco is watching an unfinished dance. Previously, Sonia Herman Dolz made other documentaries about artists, like Romance de Valentía (1993) about bullfighting and The Master and His Pupil (2003) about a master class by the famous conductor Valery Gergiev. This time, she zooms in on the creation of a choreography, on polishing the dance idiom and the conception of ideas as they come about between choreographer Conny Janssen and five dancers.
Balancing between flowing and broken movements, looking for the right handstand, the right gaze, the right dosage of energy. Without comment or further explanation, even an incomplete dance attains its own beauty in Herman Dolz' meticulously composed observations. The subtitle refers to a statement by one of the pioneers of modern dance, Martha Graham (1894-1991): 'Dance is the hidden language of the soul.' In 2008, Conny Janssen was awarded a prize by the province of Zuid-Holland, which enabled her to commission Sonia Herman Dolz to make this film.
