Metaal en melancholie

Documentary, 1993, 80 min.

Almost twenty years after leaving the country, Heddy Honigmann shot the documentary road movie Metal and Melancholy in her birthplace Lima. The capital of Peru has more then seven million inhabitants and its economy is reaching a dead end. Middle-class families with their meagre salaries can barely make ends meet. In the hope of a better feature, many Peruvians have a job on the side as taxi driver. A job which takes a pugnacious nature in view of the murderous competition.
Metal and Melancholy portrays several of these tax drivers. The film takes the viewers on a taxi ride through the streets of Lima and, via the drivers, it provides a portrait of the many ingenious ways to survive, a portrait of passion and lust for life.
