Engelen des doods

Short documentary, 1997, 57 min.

Events near Myasnoi Bor in Russia, about 100 km south east of St. Petersburg, were for years a black page in the history of Russia. In the marshes around the village are the corpses of about ten thousand soldiers. A legacy of World War II, when in 1942 General Vlasov ordered his men to end the German siege of Leningrad and he defected to the enemy. The soldiers died in the marshes and were labelled an 'army of traitors'. Now, fifty-five years later another truth is emerging. Most soldiers fought to the death for their fatherland. Engelen des doods (Angels of Death) shows how relatives pay homage to their ancestors. Looking for notes, poems and other personal possessions, they dig every year in the desolate region to bring a hidden history to the surface.
