Farewell

Documentary, 2009, 90 min.

Semi-documentary tells the true story of journalists Lady Grace Drummond-Hay and Karl von Wiegand, who flew around the world aboard the Graf Zeppelin in August 1929. Paid by newspaper tycoon Randolph Hearst, the British journalist Grace Drummond-Hay travelled on the Graf Zeppelin to report on the spectacular trip this German aircraft made over the US, Europe, Russia and Japan. Hearst also sent Karl von Wiegand along, unaware of the fact that the two had had an affair six months earlier. A voice-over tells, from Drummond-Hay's perspective, about her love for the married Von Wiegand and about the journey at the end of the Roaring Twenties, a few weeks before the Crash of 1929.
Film researcher Gerard Nyssen rediscovered footage that was actually shot during the flight. Ditteke Mensink used this material, interlaced with news archive images from the same time, to tell about a love story in a period ridden with political and social barriers.
