De Ruslui

Documentary, 1996, 60 min.

Documentary about the Vriezenveen trade colony in St. Petersburg. Around 1720 inhabitants of the Overijssel village of Vriezenveen left for St. Peterburg as market traders with home-made linen. At first they travelled back and forth to the city founded in 1703 by Peter the Great. Later they stayed more permanently. They formed an isolated group of foreigners in the rapidly growing capital of the Russian Empire at first. But in the second half of the nineteenth century, they quickly assimilated. The Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 put an end to their wealth. Many returned to Holland poor and disillusioned.
