Droomhuis

Documentary, 2004, 85 min.

Droomhuis tells two stories. In part one the camera enters houses of people who have deceided they are going to move. The film shows how they live and how they cope with space. Like nurseries that are used as studies until six o'clock at night, or living rooms that are converted into bedrooms because the bedroom became too small. The inhabitants all want to move to the new Amsterdam district of Ijburg. Sometimes urged by the lack of parks and gardens in the city centre, more often because families simply do not fit into their houses anymore. In the second part of the film, the camera visits the same people in their new houses to see how they use the newly won space. The rhythmic succession of the visits, the way in which each house is approached and the rigid form give the film a compelling character.
