Amsterdam, Global Village

Documentary, 1996, 245 min.

Johan van der Keuken dedicated the film Amsterdam, Global Village to poet Bert Schierbeek, from whom he also borrowed the motto for his film: `I always thought life was 77 stories at once.' With that point of departure, Van der Keuken takes us through Amsterdam's multicultural society. Moped courier Khalid is our guide and in his trail, we become acquainted with inhabitants from Chechnya, Bolivia and Ghana, but also with typical Jordaan women hanging out of their windows chattering away to each other. Cinematographic trips to the countries where the people come from gives the film the feel of Amsterdam as a real global village.
