Inventaris van het Moederland - Inventory of the Motherland

Documentary, 2012, 75 min.

During his reign, the last Russian tsar Nicholas II had never beheld large portions of his vast empire. He commissioned photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky (1863-1944), the inventor of colour photography in Russia, to take trips across the Volga region, the Caucasus and Central Asia between 1909 and 1915. The many preserved colour pictures provide an extraordinary outlook on the last years of the Russian tsardom, shortly before the 1917 revolution. Following Prokudin-Gorsky's footsteps, Van Lieshout takes the same itinerary in 2011, now with a movie camera. Van Lieshout's recordings alternate with Prokudin-Gorsky's gorgeous, colourful images. The still and moving, new and old pictures constitute a colourful tribute in image, sound and music to Russia right before the revolution and today.
