Het blinde orkest

Short documentary, 2002, 50 min.

Some thirty years ago, at an institute for blind women and girls in Cairo, Egypt, the Al Nour Wal Amal Orchestra was founded. This is the only philharmonic orchestra in the world that consists purely of blind musicians. The initiative turned out to be successful and today the orchestra performs home and abroad. The music is the women's source of energy and inspiration, and at the same time their greatest opponent. While the orchestra as a whole brings the concerts to a nice conclusion, each individual musician has to contend with the problems of her handicap. Together, they enjoy the pleasure of the orchestra and the music, but meanwhile they have to make important decisions about their careers. A central role in the documentary is played by the male and sighted conductor, maestro Ahmed Abu el Aid, who has determined the orchestra's course for the past twenty years.
