Achterland: de weg terug naar Cuey Machar

Documentary, 2011, 78 min.

Kon Kelei returns to his homeland South Sudan, nearly ten years after he played himself in the feature film Tussenland: an asylum-seeking refugee. This film contained excerpts from the video diary Kon made with the help of documentary filmmaker Albert Elings. Years later, Elings follows the former child soldier on his first return visit to South Sudan. They go to his place of birth and his family and everywhere they see the traces of the still ongoing war. The images of this visit alternate with those of Kon?s tribulations over the last few years in the Netherlands. After his request for asylum is initially rejected, he does eventually get a residence permit, studies law and sets himself up as someone who wants to help rebuild his country when he gets back.
