New York - Images from the Edge

Short documentary, 1995, 52 min.

Portrait of five homeless artists who live on the edge in New York. They share the fact that they try to shape their lives by creating a world of their own. Rather than to drown in the hopelessness and apathy of homeless life, they fight for recognition as artists. The documentary by Joost Bosland shows how difficult that is, but also that it can be successful, partly thanks to the interest of the art establishment for what has become known as Outsider Art. The film also reveals that art is a lethal weapon in the battle against the vicious circle of homeless life in New York: unemployment, addiction to alcohol and drugs and bitter poverty.
