Please Hold the Line

Short documentary, 1999, 49 min.

In her début documentary, Please Hold the Line, Sabine König portrays a telephone shop annex hairdresser in the heart of Amsterdam. Every day, immigrants call loved ones, friends or relatives in their mother country. They moved to Holland for political or religious reasons or from love. Please Hold the Line tells the stories of e.g. a Turkish man, a Yugoslav girl, an Iranian woman and a Dutch woman. Using interviews and by observing the callers during their often emotional phone conversations, the film shows how difficult it is to live between two cultures: one of their own and one of their adopted home.
