One Hand Clapping

Short Film, 2014, 10 min.

This found choreography is a ‘lyrical dance for hands, divided across five screens’. Joining hands with Menno Otten, Peter Delpeut composed a serene visual mini-symphony from archive footage of five chief conductors of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra: Mengelberg, Van Beinum, Haitink, Chailly and Jansons. The extreme blow-ups of their conducting hands have been taken from existing concert recordings. The five parts each show a specific tempo marking that characterises the conductor. The film ensued from the eponymous video installation that was a jubilee gift from the orchestra to the concertgebouw.
