Theresienstadt - film of waarheid

Documentary, 1995, 65 min.

Video installation investigating the historical and emotional significance of the Nazi propaganda film Theresienstadt. In 1944 the Nazis produced a documentary about the Theresienstadt concentration camp. They wanted this film to make the outside world believe that the Jewish population was being well threated. However when the film was completed, the Germans banned their own lie from being screened. The document was forgotten and largely lost.
The video installation by Kees Hin and Sandra van Beek shows survivors and experts who react on TV monitors to the few remaining film fragments adapted by Hin and Van Beek. The narration by those filmed, the silent witnesses to each other's words, swings continuously between film and reality about Theresienstadt.
