Mijn Enschede

Short documentary, 2010, 53 min.

In Mijn Enschede, filmmaker Astrid Bussink returns to Enschede. One day before moving to Amsterdam in 2000, a huge explosion at SE Fireworks swept away her house and all her stuff. The fireworks warehouse disaster claimed 23 lives and around a thousand wounded.
Ten years later, she returns to the Roombeek area, curious to see how people are dealing with their memories. From her temporary apartment, with a view of the commemorative monument, Bussink searches for answers and explanations. It is soon clear that the disaster has not been forgotten. She speaks to people directly involved and to the family of a man who disappeared without a trace. Some people suspect a conspiracy to obscure an illegal ammunition depot and there are two detectives who have sunk their teeth in the case, because they feel the cause of the catastrophe was investigated insufficiently at the time.
Bussink's search turns into a quest, when she looks for André de Vries, who was convicted of arson at SE Fireworks but later acquitted. The trail leads to Germany. Here, too, she finds out there are no answers. Not yet.
