Over Canto - About Canto

Documentary, 2011, 78 min.

Music can change lives. This certainly applies to Canto Ostinato, a three-hour piano piece, composed in the 1970s by the Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt. Ramón Gieling talked to a series of more or less known people on whose lives the mesmerising composition had a far-reaching influence. Ariane Halmar, for example, gave birth to her son to this music and the strapping DJ Arjen Bergeijk had the score tattooed on his arm, after he got to know the piece at his mother's death. The interviews alternate with extensive excerpts of concert registrations, including one with four grand pianos at Groningen Central Station, and a performance at the Concertgebouw. The film follows a tranquil pace and, like the composition itself, takes the time to penetrate deeper into the soul of man and music.
