Nader tot Máxima

Short documentary, 2002, 55 min.

On Saturday 2 February 2002, during the wedding of crown prince Willem-Alexander and the Argentinean Máxima, people filmed in Amsterdam: at the editorial office of gossip magazine Privé by the chief editor's nephew, in the decorated family car en route to the capital and by the opponents of the marriage. Even the orange pastry that a grandmother eats, sitting alone in front of her TV set, was captured. These days, everyone has a film camera, but sometimes people do not know how to operate it properly. This is subtly demonstrated by the way the footage has been edited by directors Albert Elings and Eugenie Jansen. From recordings by more than 120 filmmakers, Elings and Jansen compiled an impression of the whole day, reflecting the collective experience of the public. A bystander tersely summarises the enormous interest in the wedding: `She's marrying an entire country.'
