Painful Painting

Short documentary, 2011, 52 min.

The confrontational, large paintings by Ronald Ophuis show brute force and suffering. Director Catherine van Campen follows the artist during the genesis of a new painting and accompanies him to Sierra Leone. Both former child soldiers and the media in Sierra Leone ask the painter for the reason of his work, which visualises a past they know but have put behind them. It is Ophuis? ultimate goal to prompt people to self-examination through his compositions.
