Crazy

Documentary, 1999, 97 min.

'The war put me through a mincing machine. A different person came out the other end.' The documentary Crazy focuses on the traumatic experiences of several Dutch UN sodiers. From the first peace mission in Korea in 1950 to the wars in Cambodia, Lebanon and Bosnia. In front of the camera, several veterans reminisce and explain how they come to terms with their emotions. The music they played back then is inextricably tied up with what they witnessed. For instance, the song Crazy by Seal reminds a marine of the gruesome bloodbath on the market in Sarajevo, a member of Dutchbat in Srebrenica conquered his fear on the very dangerous road 'Bomb Alley' by playing Guns 'n Roses at full volume and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater helped a female UN soldier in Cambodia to come to terms with the child prostitution she saw. Photos and videos shot by the soldiers themselves visualise the memories.
