De slag in de Javazee

Documentary, 1995, 135 min.

Documentary lasting over two hours about the Battle of the Java Sea. In the last days of February 1942, an Allied fleet led by the legendary Dutch admiral Karel Doorman, tried in vain to prevent the Japanese from attacking the Dutch East Indies. The battle was more than a fateful clash between Allied and Japanese navies. It was a confrontation between East and West and heralded the real end of 300 years of colonial rule. Director Niek Koppen talked to people involved and juxtaposed their often-moving testimonies. Each storie throws a different light on the fatal sea battle. Together they reveal what thousands of men experienced just before, during and after the battle.
