De passievrucht

Feature film, 2003, 106 min.

One in ten children was not engendered by the man who is believed to be the father. This and more facts about sperm and the theory of evolution are the leitmotif of Treurniet's feature film debut, adapted from the novel by Karel Glastra van Loon. When his son Bo is fourteen, protagonist Armin (Peter Paul Muller) is told by his doctor that it is impossible that he is the biological father, because he is infertile. Bo's mother Monika (Carice van Houten) is no longer able to clarify her adultery, because she has been dead for nine years. Jumping back and forth between present and past, the film reveals Armin's obsessive search for Bo's potential father. In his memories, the flashbacks, he brings the suspected men to Monika's grave one by one, and proceeds to look for them in the present. Meanwhile, Armin's damaged trust puts enormous pressure on the relationship with his current girlfriend Ellen, who used to be Monika's bosom friend. Awarded with a Golden Film.
