Skin

Feature film, 2008, 85 min.

The Telefilm Skin is one portrait of the Netherlands in the eighties, when Frankie (Robert de Hoog) is seventeen. He lives at home with his parents, where his Jewish father's war past weighs heavily on the family. When his mother is admitted to hospital with a serious illness, the tensions between Frankie and his father (John Buijsman) come to a head. Frankie joins a group of skinheads, which makes him lose his best friend Jeffrey, a Surinamese skinhead. In a fray, Frankie stabs a Moluccan boy. The film constantly switches between Frankie's present (when the skinhead is in prison, wearing a tattoo of a swastika) and the events that led up to his incarceration. In prison, Frankie faces new confrontations, with his former bosom friend and his father. Based on the notorious, racist killing of Kerwin Duinmeijer in 1983. Skin is abundantly provided with ska and punk music from the eighties. Robert de Hoog was awarded the Golden Calf for Best Actor in 2008, the film the Moviesquad Award 2008.
