Every Picture Tells a Story - Wegwerkers

Short documentary, 2006, 12 min.

In this short documentary, the world of the road menders is depicted. At various locations and different times, director Debbie Kleijn filmed the men, who from late at night till early in the morning are mending roads somewhere in Holland. Kleyn edited the images of flashing lights, reflectors, lined traffic lanes, rolling stock, steaming asphalt and nocturnal deliberations into a 'visual narrative', without dialogue and with an industrial soundtrack. The film starts with a road mender who drops cones onto the asphalt one by one from a slowly driving car. On the other lanes, normal traffic roars by at full speed. When night falls, the men, standing on the asphalt, hand-rolled cigarette in the corner of the mouth, deliberate what their next action will be. They sweep fresh asphalt to the right place, paint a very white arrow on the road and remove the roll-up yellow lining strip. Contented, they look on as the traffic slowly gets going again.
