Boy Ecury

, 2003, 80 min.

Boy Ecury was a resistance hero who was executed by a German firing squad in 1944, when he was 22 years old. The Telefilm Frans Weisz made about this historical fact shows the quest by Ecury's father, trying to find his son's body after the war. The film follows two narrative threads. The present is 1947, when the Aruban businessman Dundun Ecury arrives in the Netherlands. He knows one thing for sure about Boy's death: he died with a smile on his face. Through Dundun's eyes, the past is revived. How harassments on a Brabant boarding school deepen Boy's sense of justice and how he is urged to commit acts of resistance in the war. During his search, Dundun meets the supposed killer of his son, who confronts him with himself and makes a painful revelation. The film, from a scenario by Arthur Japin, was inspired by the book Boy, an Antillean Boy in the Resistance, written by Boy Ecury's uncle, Ted Schouten.
