Silent City

Feature film, 2012, 90 min.

A sojourn in Japan as part of a work placement at the Rietveld Academy inspired Threes Anna to write a story about a young Dutch woman who threatens to drown in the metropolis of Tokyo. Published in 2006 as the novel De stille stad, and now adapted for the screen by Anna herself. Rosa quit her job at a seafood restaurant to apprentice herself to a Japanese fish master. But finding her niche in Japan turns out to be hard. The communication is awkward, misunderstandings are rife and Rosa spends her days in een grimy scullery where pupils learn how to clean fish. Although a secondary job in Tokyo?s nightlife shows her another side of Japan, incomprehension and loneliness get the better of her. Images of the chaotic city and visions of fish merge, while Rosa desperately tries to make contact.
