Nova Zembla

Feature film, 2011, 104 min.

Historical heroic epic tells the legendary story of the overwintering on Nova Zembla, as it was 'truthfully' recorded at the time by a young deckhand. In 1596, this Gerrit de Veer is an inquisitive lad aboard the doomed expedition, on a mission to find a short trade route to the East Indies. Their ship gets jammed between giant ice floes. To survive the winter, they build a hut on the barren island of Nova Zembla. Apart from the merciless nature, food shortage and mutual tensions make matters worse. By casting Doutzen Kroes in her film debut as Gerrit's distant love, this genuine all-male adventure got a romantic injection. Meanwhile, the film secured its place in the history books, as the first Dutch feature film entirely shot in 3D.
