Stemmen uit de oceaan

Documentary, 2003, 75 min.

A single breath of a whale produces enough air to blow up two hundred balloons in one go. This is just one piece of information from the documentary Touched by the Whale. The film is a combination of fiction, documentary and animations, where each style is used for a specific type of information. The fiction part deals with the kidnapping of Olaf Gunnerson, the Norwegian member of the International Whaling Committee, by a conservationist. All arguments against, but also for whaling are addressed in their discussions. In the animations, extraordinary facts about whales and dolphins are told, and the film also includes street interviews (`Whales? They're just big fat merry guys.'), sometimes shocking archive footage about the hunt and the efforts by Greenpeace to prevent it, and enchanting footage - partly owing to the accompanying music by Björk and others - of all kinds of sea mammals in their natural habitat.
