Hoe luidt het land?

Documentary, 2012, 72 min.

What does the Netherlands really sound like? Filmmaker Van Voorst van Beest traversed Holland to make a portrait of the country by taking its soundscapes as the starting point. She filmed in silent areas and discovered the landscape is growing ever noisier. You can find sound walls everywhere nowadays, but there are not many places where you can?t hear the traffic. Plane spotters along runways take pleasure in watching the planes take off or land, but in some places the air traffic makes life unbearable. The sound of windmills can thoroughly spoil people?s enjoyment of the Dutch scenery. And many Dutch shopping malls are drenched in muzak. The film introduces a variety of sound experts, but also follows a sound artist who makes you listen differently to the sounds of the country.
