Asbest, the Silent Killer

Short documentary, 1996, 40 min.

Asbestos is a cheap raw material with numerous useful applications. Unfortunately it also gave people cancer. Although the health inspectors were already aware of the damage it did to health in the 1930s, it was only in 1968 that international scientists unanimously decided that asbestos caused cancer. And it was then another twenty years before the substance was banned in Holland and other European countries. Most multinationals have still not come to terms with this: they just moved their operation to countries where is not (yet) banned. This documentary allows victims of asbestos to speak out and we see shots of the asbestos industry in Canada and India.
