P.J.H. Cuypers, Aertsbouheer

Short documentary, 1994, 50 min.

Documentary looking at the life of the famous architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) introduced the Neo-Gothic style to Holland in the middle of the last century. Using the principles of Gothic architecture, the ambitious architect developed a very personal building style. But there were also critical voices. After the construction of the controversial Central Station in Amsterdam, debates about his style became so heated that the government decided not to give him any more commissions. In the documentary, several people talk about the life and oeuvre of Cuypers. The viewer can also make the acquaintance of the architects recently-rediscovered correspondence.
