Aletta Jacobs, het hoogste streven

Feature film, 1995, 65 min.

Feature about the life of Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929). At an early age, Aletta Jacobs knew she wanted to be a doctor. She asked Thorbecke to be admitted to the university and after completing her studies she was the first woman doctor to work in Amsterdam. Here she focused on women's problems with sexuality and was an advocate of universal suffrage. Director Nouchka van Brakel appears in the film as an interviewer asking contemporaries about the life and work of Dr. Jacobs. The conversations give an impression of the stream of negative reactions that the feminist evoked. When Aletta looks back on her life at the end of the film, it also becomes clear from many photos and letters just how highly appreciated she was in the end.
