Jan Akkerman, portret met gitaar

Short documentary, 2007, 54 min.

In the sixties, guitar virtuoso Jan Akkerman and his band The Cellar Rockers were discovered in a talent scouting on the radio. Subsequently, he played in The Hunters, Brainbox and Focus. It was the hey-day of the Nederrock and his musical career blossomed. In 1973, he was elected the best guitarist in the world by the authoritative British magazine Melody Maker. How has he fared since then? Director Hans Hylkema followed him for one year in 2006, when Jan Akkerman turned sixty. His whole life, Akkerman kept searching for new challenges. He could never be pigeon-holed and does not care whether he is called a pop, rock or jazz guitarist. He feels very strongly about artistic freedom and does not fight shy of experiments. In 2006, he entered into a new musical collaboration: he composed big band music and performed with alto saxophonist Benjamin Herman and the New Cool Collective Big Band.
