De vrouw met het masker

Short documentary, 1995, 50 min.

Documentary about the life of the Habsburg queen Maria of Hungary (1505-1558). She played a significant role in the political life of her day. Her marriage to the Hungarian crown-prince Lájos marked the start of the Danube monarchy. After the death of her husband, Maria was appointed regent of the Netherlands. The task was difficult, but she learned fast. She managed to put down rebellions, fight wars and moderate between quarrelling families. After a family quarrel, the Habsburg Empire fell apart into two parts. Maria stepped down and went to Spain, where she died in 1558. For her film, Hilde van Oostrum used original material, such as letters, paintings and music, but also contemporary sources, such as an interview with a descendent of the Habsburg rulers.
