After a family quarrel, the Habsburg Empire fell apart into two parts. Maria stepped down and went to Spain, where she died in 1558. For her film, Hilde van Oostrum used original material, such as letters, paintings and music, but also contemporary sources, such as an interview with a descendent of the Habsburg rulers.
