Dierbaar

Documentary, 1999, 80 min.

It is Sandra's birthday, so the dog's ageing boss treats the local children to a bag of sweets. In the tragi-comic documentary Petting, filmmaker René Roelofs portrays several people with an exorbitant love of the pets. All are customers at an angling and pet shop in a working class area of Amsterdam.
This moving social portrait reveals how the protagonists show off their dog, cat, snake or pigeon, while also talking openly about the hope and pain in their own lives. Their unconditional love for their pets is often their guardian angel.
