Satellite Queens

Documentary, 2008, 60 min.

Fawzia, Muna, Farah and Rania are the four anchorwomen of the highly popular MBC talk show Kalam Nawaem. In this pan-Arabic show, which is broadcast weekly via satellite and reaches some two million viewers all over the world, the ladies address controversial issues like homosexuality, masturbation, incest and terrorism. The articulate and charismatic hostesses, coming from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Palestine, are followed at work, but also at home. In the studio dressing rooms, they have hearty discussions with the producer about the course the show should pursue. At home, the women talk about their life style, the excitement around the programme and the impact it has on society. All four consider their work a contribution to the shift in the traditional Arab world to a more open and democratic society. Meanwhile, the documentary shows that every new show creates a stir in the street.
