Onze man in Kazachstan

Short documentary, 1993, 55 min.

Documentary about the young Dutch farmer Herbert Bos who leaves for Kazakhstan. On the immense steppes is the Sovchoze Koksunski, a former exile colony. Here he attempts to harvest a record potato crop with the aid of Dutch potting compost and modern technology. He is received heartily but his arrival leads to a deep cultural confrontation with the local population. His business-like, pragmatic Western mentality faces the tired, disillusioned Kazakhstani, who feel deceived by the communist regime. The film provides a picture of the harshness of life in the countryside after the fall of the communist system.
