Tara

Documentary, 2002, 74 min.

When director Jet Homoet started her portrait of Groen Links politician Tara Singh Varma in January 2001, she thought she would capture the final moments of a terminally ill, politically engaged Surinam people's representative. Until the episode of the TV programme Opgelicht, in which the accusation was made - proven justified later on - that Singh Varma was not suffering from cancer, but was having financial problems. Homoet is present in Singh Varma's living room when a group of people watches this broadcast. It is a key moment; the portrait changes from a farewell into a struggle. Using excerpts from TV programmes, featuring people like Paul Rosenmöller and Youp van 't Hek, and many scenes at home with Singh Varma, the film reveals how the whole affair, from the farewell to the public confession of guilt in the TV programme Barend & Witteman, was experienced by Singh Varma.
