Vogelvrij

Short documentary, 1996, 48 min.

In Scary Man, Eugenie Jansen and Albert Elings look at the eternal struggle between man and birds. To free themselves from starlings and gulls in orchards, meadows and fish farms, man has invented all kinds of scarecrows. As well as the man on a stick billowing in the meadow, there are artificial birds of prey filled with helium, ultrasonic signals, laser pistols and even radar systems. The script for Scary Man won first prize at the scenario workshop at the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam in 1994, and the film was awarded an Earth Watch Film Award by the National Geographic Society.
