Onderhuids

Documentary, 2001, 77 min.

Previously, Ireen van Ditshuyzen has made other documentaries about ethical issues in hospitals, where doctors are compelled by time to make decisions about life and death. For this reason, the documentary diptych Onderhuids is again a confrontational and educational film. This time, Van Ditshuyzen concentrates on the way in which young people undergo a chronic illness. Hovering between perseverance and fatalism, these patients have to cope with their handicaps and in some cases with the understanding that they will not grow old. However, now that medical science is advancing rapidly, an increasing number of diseases can be treated to some extent. This confronts the youngsters with the question to what extent they can participate normally in society. They do not want to stay home and do nothing, but for example in job interviews and relationships, they do run into problems.
