De Indiaan baarde een neger

Documentary, 1992, 90 min.

Documentary in three parts provides a portrait of three Caribbean writers: Boeli van Leeuwen, Frank Martinus Arion and Tip Marugg. Much of their oeuvre is situated on their home island of Curaçao, where their novels are however scarcely read. Holland and the rest of Europe are interested in their work. The language of Curaçao is Papiamento, but these men write in Dutch. In the trilogy, people are followed who exist in the thoughts of the authors and who personify 'the Caribbean experience'. They link together the most
important of the writers' themes, such as the consequences of colonialism and the feeling of desolation on an isolated island.
