Procedure 769 - The Witnesses to an execution

Documentary, 1995, 85 min.

Documentary about people who witness an execution. On 21 April 1992, just before dawn, Robert Harris was executed in the gas chamber at San Quentin state prison. It was the first time in 25 years that Procedure 769, the document that prescribes how a condemned prisoner should be executed, was applied in California. Behind a thick glass wall, 49 people watched. There were relatives and friends but also relatives of the victims, witnesses on behalf of the state, reporters and even VIPs. Jaap van Hoewijk traced several of these witnesses and asked them why they were there and what they
had seen.
