Nisha

Short documentary, 2001, 31 min.

How do you tell your child that she has AIDS? That she is suffering from the same disease that killed her father and her mother is also infected with? Do you really have to tell? `I want to tell my daughter', the mother simply says. `It will make me feel better and it will liberate her.' Director Duco Tellegen registered how this family tragedy overshadows an Indian family, but does not affect the loving atmosphere in the house. The children dance together and watch television with their mother. The camera is also present when Nisha, the eleven-year-old daughter with a grave look in her large dark eyes, hears the news. Her eyes do not divulge her thoughts. The questions follow later. `When I grow older, will I still have it?'
