Typhoontschik - Natalia Gutman

Documentary, 1999, 77 min.

Portrait of the Russian cellist Natalia Gutman. Now 54, this living legend and mother of three travels the world and makes a deep impression with her penetrating and sober style. Eline Flipse looks at the costs of fame, the heavy responsibility for music and as a single parent in a disrupted family with growing children. Alongside interviews and rehearsal and performance footage, the film shows Gutman during a trip to Germany. Archive footage that has recently become available reminds us of the nine-year period when the Jewish Gutman was banned from playing. A film about the battle and power of a woman who tries to combine the impossible.
