Dodengang

Documentary, 1999, 65 min.

Near the Belgian town of Diksmuide one can find some of the only trenches from the First World War that are still intact. In these passages of death, between 1914 and 1918 young men fought to maintain their position in the face of the Germans. The documentary Dodengang portrays the last five Belgian soldiers still surviving this trench warfare. They are now all over 100 - the oldest is 104 - and are the last living witnesses of a war that was fought in appalling conditions early in the 20th century. Wrinkled yet lively, tottering yet clear of mind, they personify history at least eighty years ago.
