How to Get Out of the Cage

Short documentary, 2012, 55 min.

Between 1982 and 1992, filmmaker Frank Scheffer and avant-garde composer John Cage (1912-1992) met regularly. These meetings resulted in a unique historical audiovisual archive around the influential composer. This documentary portrait combines various interviews with 16-mm footage of Cage’s work and places that were important to the composer, like New York and Ryoan-ji, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. The film was released in 2012 on the occasion of Cage’s day of birth 100 years ago.
