Een leven op zee

-, 1999, 55 min.

Documentary about the director's father who, from the age of eighteen, was an engineer with the Nederlandse Pakketvaart Maatschappij (KPM); the largest shipping company ever in Holland. The KPM was responsible for all the connections between the 3000 inhabited islands of the Dutch East Indies. Alongside a personal portrait of the dramatic life of her father, Lyklema reconstructs the rise and fall of the flourishing Dutch packet steamers using interviews with four former employees. Ex-colleagues of Lyklema's father reveal how much their lives were influenced by the turbulent events of World War Two and the attempts to prevent independence for Indonesia. Finally, in 1957 the age of the KPM came to an end and the employees were forced to leave the Dutch East Indies.
