Ford Transit

Documentary, 2002, 78 min.

For many Palestinians, there is only one way to go to work. They board Ford Transit taxi vans that take them from one roadblock to the next - sometimes via dangerous shortcuts. The white vans were once used by the Israeli army and passed into Palestinian hands after the Oslo Agreements. Hany Abu-Assad filmed the young Palestinian driver Rajai in his taxi (`there are more Fords than people here') on his daily trips from Jerusalem to Ramallah. En route, it becomes clear how deep the Israeli occupation encroaches on the Palestinians' daily lives: from interviews with passengers (including political scientists, psychologists and filmmakers), from seeing scores of destroyed buildings and from witnessing numerous confrontations with Israeli soldiers. Each in his or her own way, the commuters deal with their pent-up frustrations: by rebelling, quarrelling or acquiescing.
